Can we tie LFG to AIM, Gtalk, etc?

It's so obvious, it's probably been done.

I don't really care to sit in-game, waiting for someone to run Caverns of Time (okay, I can't choose that one any more at 74, which makes the sting that much worse!). But if I could sign up for LFG and have it IM me any whispers, sending, "Healz?" to my AIM or Gtalk account, I'd be all over it.

(The answer, of course, is that my freakin' comment says Boomkin. NO HEALZ. [until dual spec] Though I do off spec heal if they ask the rest of the group first.)

Does this already exist? Please say yes. And no, a guildie AIMing me doesn't count.

If it does exist, it's illegal. No programs are allowed to interact with the WoW client externally without being licensed by Blizzard.

So, no WoW <--> AIM/Gtalk/etc communication allowed.

It might be possible to write an addon that updates and saves a text file every, say 10 seconds. Then hack an opensource IM client like Pidgin to check that text file every 10 seconds also and send you a message if it updates. Something like that.

Well, I'd like to see it work when I'm not running WoW, I was kinda hoping Blizzard would come through and team up with AIM, etc. I think you could hack Pidgin or some MSN code for one-way info pretty easily if you had WoW open. In fact, you could have it poll that text file pretty quickly and find out exactly when you get a whisper. But you'd still have your little dude sitting there, AFKing while you waited.

If Blizzard would integrate AIM and LFG, I think I'd play more -- a short term loss for Bliz, but long-term gain when I don't suspend my account as frequently. Less casual == more subscription cash. And I'd probably shift from soloing a ton to instancing more. /shrug
